ЁЯЩП What is Lingashtakam?

Lingashtakam (Sanskrit: рд▓िрдЩ्рдЧाрд╖्рдЯрдХрдо्) is one of the most revered and widely chanted devotional hymns in the Shaiva tradition of Hinduism. The very name tells us its essence — Linga refers to the sacred Shivalinga, the divine symbolic form of Lord Shiva, and Ashtakam means "eight verses." Together, Lingashtakam is a garland of eight radiant Sanskrit stanzas, each concluding with the glorious refrain: "Linga Namaste, Linga Namaste, Namaste Lingate Namah" — a prostration at the feet of the eternal, formless divinity.

Each verse of Lingashtakam beautifully describes the Shivalinga from a different perspective — its cosmic radiance, its worship by Brahma, Vishnu, and the celestial sages, its connection to the five elements of creation, and its role as the ultimate refuge for the suffering devotee seeking liberation from the endless cycle of birth and death.

Traditional Attribution: Lingashtakam is widely attributed to the great Advaita philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya (c. 788–820 CE), who composed numerous devotional hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Shakti, Lord Vishnu, and other deities to revive the spiritual traditions of Bharat.

Some scholars trace it to an earlier Shaiva tradition, citing its deep correlation with the Shiva Purana's description of Linga worship. Regardless of its exact origin, Lingashtakam has been an inseparable part of Shiva puja across India for over a millennium.

The Shivalinga is not merely a physical symbol — it is considered the Nirguna Brahman (the Absolute beyond attributes) made accessible to human devotion. When a devotee chants Lingashtakam with a sincere heart, they are not merely reciting poetry; they are entering a meditative communion with the infinite, attributeless Shiva who is the source, sustainer, and ultimate destination of all existence.

тД╣️

Did You Know? The Shivalinga is mentioned in the Linga Purana, Shiva Purana, Skanda Purana, and Atharva Veda, making it one of the oldest forms of worship in the Indian subcontinent, predating many established scriptures.

Spiritual Significance of the Shivalinga

To truly appreciate Lingashtakam, one must first understand what the Shivalinga represents philosophically and spiritually. Far from being a mere physical object, the Shivalinga is considered one of the most profound spiritual symbols ever conceived by the human mind.

Lingashtakam

ЁЯФ╣ The Cosmic Pillar of Light

The Shiva Purana narrates a fascinating cosmic event — Brahma and Vishnu, each claiming supremacy, were confronted by an infinite pillar of blazing light that extended beyond all visible horizons. This was the first manifestation of the Jyotirlinga — the column of fire (Agni Stambha) — which is Shiva's ultimate form. Neither Brahma nor Vishnu could find its beginning or end, signifying Shiva's boundless, infinite nature. The Shivalinga in our temples symbolises this very infinite cosmic pillar.

ЁЯФ╣ The Three Sections of Shivalinga

ЁЯПЫ️

The Shivalinga is traditionally divided into three parts: Brahma Bhaga (the square base representing the Creator), Vishnu Bhaga (the octagonal middle section representing the Sustainer), and Rudra Bhaga (the cylindrical upper portion representing Shiva the Transformer). Thus, the Shivalinga embodies all three aspects of the Cosmic Trinity simultaneously.

ЁЯФ╣ Nirguna and Saguna — The Two Aspects

In Hindu philosophy, the Divine is approached in two ways — as Saguna (with attributes and form) and as Nirguna (without attributes, formless, infinite). The Shivalinga is uniquely both at once — it is a form, yet it represents the formless; it is finite in its physical appearance, yet it points to the infinite Brahman. This is why the great Adi Shankaracharya, a proponent of Advaita (non-dualism), found the Shivalinga to be the perfect object of both devotion and philosophical contemplation.

ЁЯФ╣ The Pancha Bhoota Lingas

Among the most sacred Shiva temples in South India are the Pancha Bhoota Stalas — five temples where the Shivalinga embodies each of the five primordial elements (Pancha Bhootas) of creation:

Temple Location Element Linga Name
Chidambaram Tamil Nadu Space (Akasha) Akasha Linga
Kalahasti Andhra Pradesh Air (Vayu) Vayu Linga
Tiruvannamalai Tamil Nadu Fire (Agni) Agni Linga
Thiruvanaikaval Tamil Nadu Water (Jal) Appu Linga
Kanchipuram Tamil Nadu Earth (Prithvi) Prithvi Linga

When you chant Lingashtakam, you are in essence invoking and honouring this profound cosmic reality — the Shivalinga that is simultaneously the five elements, the cosmic pillar of light, and the infinite Paramatman beyond all concepts.

ЁЯМЯ Benefits of Chanting Lingashtakam

The Phala Shruti of Lingashtakam itself declares that its faithful recitation near the Shivalinga grants the devotee access to Shivaloka. Beyond this ultimate spiritual reward, devoted chanting of Lingashtakam is believed to confer a wide range of spiritual, mental, and material benefits as described in the Shaiva tradition.

Lingashtakam
ЁЯзШ
Deep Spiritual Peace
Regular chanting calms the restless mind and fills the heart with a profound, inexplicable tranquility that transcends ordinary comfort.
ЁЯФе
Karma Purification
As Verse 5 indicates, Lingashtakam destroys accumulated sins (Sanchita Paapa) from past lives and cleanses negative karmic impressions.
ЁЯза
Enhanced Wisdom & Intellect
Verse 3 specifically states the Shivalinga enhances Buddhi (intelligence). Students and scholars chanting this stotra may find improved focus and clarity.
ЁЯШв
Relief from Suffering
Verse 1 affirms the Linga destroys Janmaja Duhkha — the inherent sufferings born from the cycle of life. Chanting offers genuine spiritual solace.
ЁЯПЖ
Ego Dissolution
The story of Ravana's pride being shattered (Verse 2) teaches that Shiva removes arrogance. Chanting humbles the ego and fosters true humility.
ЁЯМ╕
Deepened Devotion (Bhakti)
Verse 6 teaches that the Linga is truly worshipped only through sincere feeling. Regular chanting naturally deepens one's capacity for pure devotion.
ЁЯМЩ
Liberation (Moksha)
The Phala Shruti promises attainment of Shivaloka. In Advaita philosophy, this signifies ultimate liberation — merging with the supreme Consciousness.
ЁЯЫб️
Divine Protection
Invoking Sadashiva through this stotra is believed to create a spiritual shield around the devotee, offering protection from negativity and unseen forces.

Important Note: The benefits of Lingashtakam are not mechanical or automatic — they arise through sincere faith, consistent practice, and a genuine orientation of the heart toward Lord Shiva. The Shastra says: "Bhavair Bhaktibhir Eva Cha" — it is through sincere feeling and devotion that the Linga is truly worshipped.

ЁЯУ┐ How & When to Chant Lingashtakam

While Lingashtakam can be chanted at any time by any sincere devotee, the Shaiva tradition recommends certain practices that maximise the spiritual efficacy of this sacred stotra.

Lingashtakam

ЁЯЧУ️ Auspicious Times for Chanting

Time / Occasion Significance
Brahma Muhurta (4–6 AM) The most spiritually potent hour of the day; mind is clear and receptive
Monday (Somavar) Monday is sacred to Lord Shiva; chanting on this day is especially powerful
Maha Shivaratri The greatest night of Shiva; fasting and chanting through the night is ideal
Pradosham (13th lunar day) The twilight period on Trayodashi; Shiva is in a particularly benevolent mood
Shravan Month The holiest month dedicated to Shiva; daily chanting is highly meritorious
During Abhishekam Chanting while offering sacred bath to the Shivalinga amplifies devotional energy
Sunset (Sandhya) The transition between day and night is another spiritually sensitive time

ЁЯУЛ Step-by-Step Chanting Guide

  1. 1
    Purify Yourself
Take a bath or wash your hands and feet. Wear clean, preferably white or saffron-coloured clothing. This physical purification prepares the body as a vessel for sacred sound.
  2. 2
    Set Your Sacred Space
Sit facing East or North in a clean, quiet place. If possible, sit before a Shivalinga or an image of Lord Shiva. Light a ghee diya (lamp) and incense.
  3. 3
    Begin with Pranava
Chant "Om" three times slowly, feeling its vibration fill your chest and head. This opens the consciousness and aligns you with the cosmic frequency of Shiva.
  4. 4
    Offer Bel Leaves & Flowers
If worshipping a Shivalinga, offer Bel (Bilva) leaves, white flowers, or water. If chanting at home without a Linga, simply hold your palms together in Anjali mudra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Lingashtakam (рд▓िрдЩ्рдЧाрд╖्рдЯрдХрдо्) is a sacred Hindu stotra composed of eight Sanskrit verses that praise and glorify the Shivalinga — the divine symbol of Lord Shiva. The word is formed from "Linga" (the symbol of Shiva) and "Ashtakam" (eight verses). Each verse describes the Linga from a different angle — its cosmic significance, the deities who worship it, and its power to liberate devotees from sin and suffering.
Lingashtakam is traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya (c. 788–820 CE), the brilliant philosopher, theologian, and spiritual reformer of ancient India who was the chief proponent of Advaita Vedanta. He composed numerous devotional hymns (stotras) dedicated to various deities, including the Shivashtakam, Rudrashtakam, Shiva Mahimna Stotra, and many others. Some Shaiva scholars trace Lingashtakam to earlier oral traditions, but Shankaracharya is its most widely accepted composer.
The most auspicious times include: Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn, 4–6 AM) daily; Mondays (Somavar), which are sacred to Lord Shiva; Maha Shivaratri (the Great Night of Shiva); the holy month of Shravan; and during Pradosham (the twilight period on the 13th lunar day). Lingashtakam is also chanted during Abhishekam (the sacred bathing ritual of the Shivalinga) in temples.
Daily chanting of Lingashtakam is said to: remove accumulated past-life sins (Sanchita Karma), bring mental peace and clarity, enhance intelligence and wisdom, dissolve ego and pride, offer protection from negative forces, purify the emotional body, deepen devotion (bhakti), grant relief from the suffering inherent in existence, and ultimately lead the devotee toward Moksha (liberation). The Phala Shruti verse promises that sincere chanters will attain Shivaloka and rejoice eternally with Lord Shiva.
This is the opening line of Lingashtakam's first verse. "Brahma" refers to the Creator God. "Muraari" is a name of Lord Vishnu, meaning "the slayer of demon Mura." "Sura" means the celestial gods. "Archita" means worshipped. "Lingam" is the divine symbol of Shiva. Together the phrase means: "The Linga worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu (Muraari), and all the gods." It establishes the supreme status of the Shivalinga — even the highest divine beings in the cosmos bow before it.
Yes, they are distinct hymns with different focuses, though both are eight-verse stotras (Ashtakams) praising Lord Shiva. Lingashtakam specifically glorifies the Shivalinga — the cosmic symbol of Shiva — and its verses describe the Linga's appearance, the deities who worship it, and its power to transform and liberate. Shivashtakam, on the other hand, praises the personal qualities, divine forms, and cosmic nature of Lord Shiva himself as a being. You can read the complete Shivashtakam here.
Absolutely. Lingashtakam, like all the stotras composed by Adi Shankaracharya, is a prayer from the heart of a devotee to the Divine — it carries no gender restrictions. Women devotees in every part of India have chanted Lingashtakam as part of their daily Shiva worship for centuries. Devotion (bhakti) is the primary requirement, not gender.
Phala Shruti (literally "hearing of the fruit") is the concluding verse of a stotra that describes the spiritual fruits and rewards promised to those who faithfully recite the entire hymn. It serves as a divine declaration of the stotra's purpose and power. In the case of Lingashtakam, the Phala Shruti promises that whoever chants Lingashtakam in the presence of Shiva shall attain Shivaloka (the divine abode of Shiva) and dwell there in eternal bliss. It should always be recited at the end of Lingashtakam.

Om Namah Shivaya — May Shiva's Grace Be with You

Lingashtakam is far more than an ancient poem. It is a living spiritual technology — a ladder of consciousness that, when chanted with sincerity and understanding, lifts the devotee from the ordinary realm of ego-driven existence into the luminous presence of the eternal Sadashiva. Whether you are seeking material relief, mental peace, intellectual clarity, or the ultimate liberation of Moksha, Lingashtakam offers all of these as the natural fruit of sincere devotion.

We pray that your chanting of these eight sacred verses brings you ever closer to the divine Linga — the cosmic pillar of light that is the beginning, the sustainer, and the ultimate destination of all existence.
